First Proctor Paragraph 5/8
After five days of classes, sports, study hall, and evening commitments, the last thing I want is to have a class on Saturday. Other private schools do not have classes six times a week. It is tiring having five classes a day five days a week, but having another one or two on a Saturday makes it worse, especially knowing you have to sit in study hall for an hour and a half on a Friday night.

week 5 Qote Response
Officer Delinko is asking Dana questions, that Dana answered by saying " Why dont you just kiss my big fat butt" Officer Delinko is trying to find out who is doing all the vandalism at the construction site. Dana answered this way because he was offended that Officer Delinko thinks it is him. Dana is the bully that has been picking on Roy, and hes not an eco terrorist.

Outline on Hoot Paper
Paragraph #1 – Talk about who kids are and why they get involved with owls
- Roy Eberhardt (new kid)
- Moved to coconut Grove, Florida
- Has no real friends , always sits alone, there is a bully that teases him
- Dana Mathews (the bully)
- If dana mathews never put roys face up to the bus that one day he would of never seen the tow headed running boy, and if he never saw him he would have never seen Beatrice, and if he never saw beatrice he might never had discovered the owls living on the corner of East Oriole Avenue
- Roy learned about owls from running boy and mullet fingers and got interested in them
Paragraph #2 – Talk about Pancake House and why they want to build on that property – don’t care about owls and just want to build the property5
- Construction company begins building a Pancake house but Roy knows that the owls are burrowing under the ground on the site
- Construction company ignores that the owls are there and keeps building but the kids want this to stop.
- In order for the company to stop building, the kids feel they have to vandalize the construction site to save the owls
Paragraph #3 – What the kids do and why you think it is justified despite the rules against vandalism
- Specific acts that the kids do are:
- Take stakes out where the company is planning on building
- Spray paint windows of cars
- Something about an alligator
- Goal is to try to stop the construction company from building, or at least buy a little more time to save the owls
- Kids know that what they are doing is against the rules (policy officer talks to them and warns them – quote from book?)
- Kids still want to do anything they can to save the owls and are willing to get in trouble – eco-sabotage
Paragraph #4 – A real incident that happened in real life of where eco-sabotage worked
- Find a situation where it really worked
- Find out what people did and what outcome was
Conclusion
- Sum up why eco-sabotage ok in certain circumstances
- Why was it ok with the owls
- Is it worth the risk

First Paragraph "Hoot" 4/17
Eco sabotage the destruction of property by vandals is ethically justified. Eco sabotage has been successfully used since the 1970s. It has helped re-shape environmental laws throughout the world today. Eco sabotage was formerly known as Monkey Wrenching, a term defined by Edward Abbey. Edward Abbey’s novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang presented the idea of monkey wrenching to protect the South West. Groups like “Earth’s First” began using Edward Abbeys tactics. Examples of some successes are saving owls and changes in fishing nets to help save dolphins from getting tangled in the net. In the book Hoot written by Carl Hiaasen, three children engage in eco sabotage to save a family of owls from a construction site. This is justified because they are trying to protect a family of owls, and this is more important to them the following the laws prohibiting vandalism.

"every little bit helps when your trying to get ahead"
In this quote Roy is talking to Officer Delinko when he says this quote. This quote is saying that if you get ahead on things it helps that much more. It will help you understand what is going on better if you get a head start on it.

Articles on eco-terrorism
) In California, construction was halted on the San Bernardino Medical Center and, later, on a neighboring subdivision to protect the Delhi Sands flower-loving fly. Near Bakersfield, Calif., a farmer was arrested in 1994 by Fish and Wildlife officers for inadvertently killing five Tipton kangaroo rats while plowing his own soil. His tractor and plow were seized as "murder weapons." Under the ESA he faced heavy fines and three years in prison.
This small article is relevant to my paper, because it shows how this construction can not only harm the animals habitat, but it can also kill them. The trucks could harm the animals by running them over, or barrying there homes underground. In the book Hoot, they are having the same problems with the construction in the area with the owls.
2) As for the eco-terrorists who destroy property and (in the case of the Unabomber) even harm or kill people, they would not be so brazen in committing terrorism were in not for the moral sanction they currently derive from the anti-human philosophy underlying environmentalism. Furthermore, governments stripped of its power to sacrifice people to nature would have more resources and resolve to track these criminals down and bring them to justice.
This relates to what is going on in the book because they are destroying the property so it cost more money to replace it, and it waste time. This shows how far the ELF or any anti eco-terrorists will go to save the environment.
3) It motivates environmentalists to protect endangered species with so much zeal that they are oblivious to the harm inflicted on people
This also relates to the book, because they are trying to safe a specific species (owls) from the construction that is going up in that area. They will destroy property, and do anything just to help the endangered species, that are in the area. They don’t want to kill there envirornment and make them go to a different place where they might not be able to adapt to.

Brain Storm
1. Eco-sabotage, the destruction of property by vandals, is ethically justified in certain circumstances.
Stakes pulled/wholes filled/alligators in port potty/slashed tires/spray paint cop car to bring attention to the owls.
Positives
*They are trying to save the owls from leaving their natural habitat.
* They are trying to prevent another large store from being built
*Looking for a change of policy
Negatives
*Breaking the law
*Sabotage towards Construction Company.
*Wasted money
During the past several years, special interest extremism, as characterized by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), has emerged as a serious terrorist threat. Generally, extremist groups engage in much activity that is protected by constitutional guarantees of free speech and assembly. Law enforcement becomes involved when the volatile talk of these groups transgresses into unlawful action. The FBI estimates that the ALF/ELF have committed more than 600 criminal acts in the United States since 1996, resulting in damages in excess of 43 million dollars.
-From FBI website

Extremist special interest groups seek to resolve specific issues, rather than effect widespread political change. Special interest extremists continue to conduct acts of politically motivated violence to force segments of society, including the general public, to change attitudes about issues considered important to their causes.

Since 1977, when disaffected members of the ecological preservation group Greenpeace formed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and attacked commercial fishing operations by cutting drift nets, acts of "eco-terrorism" have occurred around the globe. (Caused attention and now in many cases are using different types of nets…)
In recent years, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) has become one of the most active extremist elements in the United States. Despite the destructive aspects of ALF's operations, its operational philosophy discourages acts that harm "any animal, human and nonhuman."
Earth First is known as an eco terrorist group, however they have helped change many environmental policies. Biscuit Old Growth Forrest etc.

The policeman nodded grimley. "alligators"
This quote was unique because there arnt alligators up here, and it was wierd to find an alligator of all animals. Instead I thought it would have been a racoon or a skunk or something that lives around here.

sketch 3 week 3
In a dark room with no lights 3 other people in the same room, in square chairs with designs, 2 lights one a lamp the other a black table light. Time going by slower 8:15 windows above me pitch black out, 6 lights hanging down from the ceiling white wire coming down. Table in the middle of the room a light brown color with streaks of different shades. 3 chairs at the table 1 pushed in to not. As I look around the room there is a poster of polar bears on the poster it says, “ No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. Now it is 8:20 as I’m looking around the room to think about more to write about. More people signing on and off on Instant messenger. Looking around the room I see Henry laughing in the corner. Listening more closely I here an airplane go by. My way here wind blowing hard, cool breeze coming in the early spring night. Clouds moving stars starting to come out. Music on high Bone Thugs and Harmony. Hear wind gusting from inside, big gust then little. As I look down the hall I see 6 doors until the exit sign lighting up the EX of the exit sign is lit up but the IT of the exit sign are out.
Sketch 2 week 2
Blue sky clouds over head, as people walking by, seeing the health center in the distance, while sitting on steps, seeing a class outside talking, MLS to the left with a big tree in front bare, no leaves, birds chirping, flying by. Crows in the tree picking at the branches. As they fly away, cars in the background making noises, UPS truck pulling into the proctor campus, smelling dampness in the air. From the rain. A penny on the ground heads up made in 1967. As the spring starts to come feel the warm air, some leaves are starting to come out. American flag blowing with the breeze, as I hear the noise of cars passing. Gum on the ground, someone else walks by with Nike shoes. Sitting here watching the snow melting infront of my eyes, puddles of water under the snow, water dripping down, and down, make the puddle bigger. White building green shudders, people walking in and out of the front door, one with a business suit on with a red tie. As looking back around blue sky turning back into grey clouds, people getting out of classes, asking “what time practice is” more birds going by tree to tree finding food. More people going across the field passing the health center, the class that was outside is now vanished. Once again quiet, just hear cars going by and birds churping.hear a plane in the distance.

Tyler is moving and thinking out loud, He played with rocket ships as a child and something initiated the thought of "T" minus 10 seconds. Maybe he heard it on the radio, or on the television or in a movie.

Sketch 1 week 1
In a room full of lights, little, big, bright, dim. One flickering in the corner about to go out. Chairs pushed in at the table, while others are away from the table, brown, with different shades of color, designs running down the chairs. The computer is printing papers after papers. Looking down the recycling bin full of used ripped papers, books on the shelf, dictionary, SAT, and hairy potter. As looking up to the wall a poster of Wellesley College, with kayakers in the river with blue skis with some clouds, with trees all around. Backpacks unzipped, books out, people’s computers open, jackets off, number 27 on the jacket, green and black with white stripes. Calendar in the back round March 26, Monday, 2007, 8:05. The printer printing more paper, as the person goes to pick it up jeans light blue, with a navy blue shirt, Lights still shinning bright, look up as the exit sign lights up.
